Henry Bernstein, a former attorney, received an honorary degree from the University. Bernstein, who was a partner with the New Orleans law firm of Milling, Benson and Woodard, taught business law from 1990 to 2012 as an adjunct professor in UNO's Department of Management. He has served for many years on the board of directors and as president of the New Orleans Speech and Hearing Center and has been a volunteer with the Vieux Carre Commission and other nonprofit groups, working to improve and preserve the French Quarter in New Orleans
