Dr Buchanan’s areas of expertise are polar geopolitics, energy security and international security orders with a focus on Russian strategy. Currently Head of Research for the Royal Australian Navy. International Security (with a focus on Polar Strategy) researcher formally based at the Australian Defence Department's War College, Canberra as Lecturer in Strategic Studies for the Australian War College's Defence and Strategic Studies Course (DSSC). Non-Resident Fellow and Co-Director of the Modern War Institute's Project 6633, a polar security research network. The 2021/2022 Australian Parliamentary Research Fellow working on Antarctic security. Strong research output and policy impact track record with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in International, Political and Strategic Studies.
