Astoria Financial Corporation is the holding company formed in 1993 to facilitate the conversion of Astoria Federal Savings and Loan Association from a mutual form of ownership to stock ownership. The Long Island-based institution has since grown via acquisitions to become the second largest thrift in New York State and the sixth largest in the country.
