The Smiths Group PLC is a global technology and service company that focuses on developing medical, security and defense, oil and gas, and space and commercial aerospace technologies. The company contains five divisions: John Crane, Smiths Medical, Smiths Detection, Smiths Interconnect, and Flex-Tek. The John Crane division works on developing mechanical seals and support systems. The Medical division works on specialty medical devices and consumables. The Detection division develops sensors and systems that detect and identify explosives, narcotics, weapons, chemical agents, biohazards, and contraband. The Interconnect division develops specialized electronic and radio frequency devices. The group was founded in London in 1851 as Smiths Industries. It has since changed its name to Smiths Group PLC and now operates in over 50 countries. While the umbrella group is still headquartered in London, some of its divisions are headquartered in the United States.
