Path Scientific, LLC ("PSL" or "Company") is a small medical device company located just outside of Boston, Massachusetts. PSL was founded by Terry Herndon in 2004 after retiring from a long and distinguished career at MIT's Lincoln Laboratories. Shortly before the Company's inception Herndon became focused on drug delivery methodology. In this regard, Herndon began developing a painless drilling technology for skin and nail. The technology relies on the difference in electrical impedance between the outermost layer of skin or nail and bodily fluids to signal precise forward and rapid reverse actions to painlessly create openings in stratum corneum or nail plate. An added feature is an abrasion capability which can painlessly create multiple microconduits through skin, thus allowing the transdermal delivery of even large molecule drugs. Herndon's technology, which has been assigned to PSL, is secured by several patents with priority dates ranging from 2003-2014. One of the micro-motors which advances and retracts the cutting member additionally has stepping capability that provides the ability to drill to extremely precise depths in bone or nail. An added feature relies on current drawn to signal the approach of dorsal boundaries for applications, such as orthopedic drilling, where penetration of the dorsal wall is undesirable.
