The Information Age. HoosierNET set to offer Internet JUSTIN KERR Oct 18, 1995 Facebook Twitter Email $3 FOR FIRST 13 WEEKS Facebook Twitter Email Print Save The lineup of Internet service providers in Northwest Indiana continues to expand. HoosierNet, a service of Kennek Ltd. of Valparaiso, offers both dial-up and direct connections to the Internet, said President Ken Sorenson. HoosierNet maintains banks of modems in both Valparaiso and Chesterton, so anyone who can call to these communities locally can connect to HoosierNet, he said. This includes residents of Michigan City, Portage and Kouts. "We've been up and running since April 3," said Sorenson, who also works in network services for Valparaiso University. "Business is looking pretty good." HoosierNet's services include access to all features of the Internet, including the World Wide Web and Usenet news groups, which is a collection of thousands of public posting areas on a wide variety of subjects. However, HoosierNet does not carry a couple categories of news groups, including the infamous alt.sex... hierarchy. "We felt it was in the best interest not to carry them," Sorenson said. HoosierNet's users can choose their own software for surfing the Internet, but "we recommend Internet In a Box," which HoosierNet sells for under $100, Sorenson said. Although they don't have plans to expand their coverage area, they do eventually hope to branch into other communication services, including videoconferencing and ISDN service, Sorenson said. So what's the advantage of HoosierNet over all the other local Internet service providers? "I think we're the lowest cost of anybody out there," Sorenson said, quoting a basic subscription rate of $10 a month for 10 hours of time. He added that other rate plans were available for users who wanted more time.
