IEEE Industry Connections (IC) Program: “Connectivity Harmonization of the Digital Citizen” Project Background and OverviewParalleling the rapid, global advancement of wireless networks and technologies, a ubiquitous ecosystem of connected sensors, sensor systems, and internet-of-things (IoT) is being developed. As a result, an individual becomes a “digital citizen” in an “immersive city” where the benefits of connectivity enhancemultiplefacets of society from personal health and wellness to SmartCity and Smart Industry applications.This IC project focuses on the individual (e.g. Digital Citizen) and the individual’s connected relationship to devices and networks. The resulting impact of this IC project spans personal area networks of on-body, in-body, and near-body connectivity through local area networks of internet access points (fixed or mobile) to metropolitan area networks. The objective of this IC project is to establish an environment of collaboration and harmonization of interoperability spanning the multiple networks. This collaboration is intended toaccelerate innovation and foster impactful solutions resulting in improved health, safety, and community resource management.The IC project is divided into the following seven workstreams:1.Wireless Wearable Testbed (WWT)2.Wearable to Clinical Data Stream Optimization3.Expand the Digital Journey beyond PAN/WAN4.Develop a blockchain communication protocol with 360 data perspective. 5.Consider Implementation Challenges on a Global Front in a future city environment.6.Harmonization and coordination with other IEEE and Industry Initiatives 7.Support Education, Outreach and Interoperability EventsWorkstream 1: Wireless Wearable Testbed (WWT)The objective of this effort is to establish a common, open platform of specialized test equipment centered on the human body. This testbed willbe able to evaluate the effectiveness of personal area networks (e.g. on-body, in-body, and near-body) for commercially available wireless protocols as well as emerging academic, pre-standard, and custom systems. This testbed will be used to evaluate both radio frequency (RF) performance metrics (e.g. radiated power and receiver sensitivity) Page|2as well as system-level interoperability and security of data generation and data transfer.The testbed consists of a human body mannequin (e.g. phantom) within a shielded, electromagnetically anechoic environment. The phantom mimics the effects of the human body on antennas and wireless devices. The anechoic environment allows for a controlled, repeatable application of wireless signals around the human phantom. The testbed is ideally suited for the research and development of wearable solutions for commercial, medical, and mission critical (e.g. first responder and military) applications. The testbed is frequency, protocol, and device agnostic so as to supporta broad range of existing, planned, and experimental wireless devices and solutions from commercial-ready to academic investigations.The IC program intends to establish four identical testbeds globally: US, EU, Israel, and Asia. Each testbed will be capable of evaluating the following aspects of connectivity:Radio Frequency (RF) performance: passive (antenna-only) and active (transmitted power and receiver sensitivity).System level hardware, firmware, and software interoperabilitySystem level data interoperabilitySystem level security and vulnerability assessmentWorkstream 2: Wearable to Clinical Data Stream Optimization.The objective of this effort is to identify system-level interoperability gapswithin the data streamfrom individual sensors and sensor systemsthrough the network.Emphasis will be placed on body-centric sensors (e.g. biometric or near-body environmental). This effort is intended to foster optimization of data collection and data transmission to meet network challenges and device limitations.As needed, system-level performance can be assessed using the testbed from Work Stream 1.Workstream 3: Expand the Digital Journey beyond PAN/WANThe objective of this effort is ensure a harmonization of interoperability beyond the localized interconnectivity of the digital citizen to wider areas of connectivity (including digital home, digital hospitals, and mobile vehicles). This effort will identify and quantify interoperability gaps and, as needed, foster harmonization efforts to bridge interoperability gaps. As needed, system-level interoperability can be assessed using the testbed from Work Stream 1.Workstream 4: Develop a blockchain communication protocol with 360 data perspective. Page|3Blockchain has been identified as a paradigm shifting means to protect data security. IEEE has established a broad initiative to investigate and promote the incorporation of blockchain technologies from agriculture to healthcare and smart city applications. The objective of this effort is to identify and characterize opportunities where blockchain technologies can be incorporated enhance the Digital Citizen’s connectivity experience. Blockchain offers a unique forward and backward (e.g. 360) perspective on data security and data transfer. As needed, system-level data transfercan be assessed using the testbed from Work Stream 1.Workstream 5: Consider Implementation Challengeson a Global Front in a future city environment. The objective of this effort is to identify and characterize interoperability gaps and data chain vulnerabilities that threaten compliance to existing and emerging data security requirements (such as GDPR and PSK2).This effort is closely linked to Workstream 4. Workstream 6: Harmonization and coordination with other IEEE and Industry InitiativesIEEE has initiated a broad range of industry initiatives focused on the Digital Citizen in and Immersive City environment. A non-exhaustive set of initiatives include IoT, Blockchain, 5G and Beyond, Sensors and Sensor Systems, and Smart Cities. The objective of this effortis to maintain a close relationship with the IEEE initiatives as well as other industry initiatives (such as 3GPP, Bluetooth, WiFi Alliance, Lora Alliance,....) As needed, system-level the harmonization across initiativescan be assessed using the testbed from Work Stream 1.Workstream 7: Support Education, Outreach and Interoperability EventsThe objective of this effortis maximize the impact of this IC program through targeted outreach and messaging. Ideally, this program will develop into an on-going, self-sustaining global IEEE based effort. Each of the workstreams will evolve and adapt at wireless technologies and connectivity requirements evolve.
