Future Skills College

Future Skills College opened in June 2017 and is a full-time, one year, pre-apprenticeship pathway designed for secondary school students. Future Skills College is offered as a course choice option for students entering S5 and S6 in Dundee City and Angus Council secondary schools. Future Skills College represents a highly innovative approach to managing the transition from full-time education into the world of work. Closing the gap and securing full-time employment for young people as apprentices in their chosen field. Future Skills College first secures potential full-time apprenticeship opportunities with local employers then through the school course choice process recruits students to fill these places. Future Skills College for school session 2020/20 is currently recruiting for bespoke courses in: Early Education and Childcare Plumbing Electrical Joinery Hospitality ​Business Administration Completing school + Students continue on their school rolls. Offered as a senior phase option in 12 secondary, schools students spend two days per week completing their secondary education but with a stronger link to their chosen area of employment. The schooling component of Future Skills College brings students from across Dundee and Angus to dedicated facilitates within Dundee and Angus College. Students continue to have access to a broad curriculum, but with a strong focus on literacy, numeracy, RME as well as Health and Wellbeing. As students stay on a school roll, and if they are eligible, they can access: Child Benefit; Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA); free school meals and bus passes. Studying at college + Students spend two days per week on specially designed pre-apprenticeship college courses in their chosen area of employment. ​These college courses help to prepare our students for full-time apprenticeships and should mean that they get flying start into their chosen professions. Students also take part in a wide range of activities to build their confidence, widen their experience and gain additional qualifications. This year students participated in Growth Mindset workshops, outdoor education activities as well as the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI). All students have full Dundee and Angus College gym membership as an integral part of their studies. Work placement + Students spend one day per week on work placement with what we hope will be their future employer. ​ This crucial part of the course gives students the opportunity to meet with other staff and get used to the expectations of employers, for example good timekeeping and acceptable workplace behaviour. This work placement experience should mean that they are ready to start an apprenticeship better prepared at the end of FSC than they were when they joined us. ​ FSC also gives employers an opportunity to start building their own young workforce, taking the hassle out of recruitment, basic training and support for their new employees.
