Robert E. Cooper, Jr. was appointed October 31, 2006 by the Tennessee Supreme Court to serve an eight-year term as state attorney general and reporter. Cooper, 50, of Nashville, served as Gov. Phil Bredesen's legal counsel since 2002. Cooper is a former partner at the Nashville law firm of Bass, Berry & Sims, where he specialized in corporate, constitutional and regulatory litigation. A Chattanooga native, Cooper is a graduate of Yale University Law School and graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University. He has served as an adjunct professor at Vanderbilt University Law School and is a son of former state Supreme Court Justice Robert E. Cooper, who served on the court from 1974 to 1990.
