Mark W. Smith is executive vice president and chief financial officer of Spherion Corporation (NYSE:SFN). Founded in 1946, Spherion® is a leading recruiting and staffing company that provides integrated solutions to meet the evolving needs of companies and job candidates. Employing 275,000 people annually through its network of 700+ offices, Spherion is one of North America’s largest employers. Promoted to executive vice president in November 2007, Smith has oversight responsibility for accounting, business services and internal auditing, as well as all information technology initiatives and infrastructure support. Smith led the implementation of the Company’s enterprise resource planning system, one of the most far-reaching operating initiatives ever undertaken at Spherion. Most recently senior vice president and chief financial officer for Spherion, Smith joined the organization in 1997 as vice president of finance. In that role, he led the creation of an integrated business services operation that included the functions of payroll, billing, purchasing, payables, accounting, financial reporting, real estate and benefits administration. During his tenure with Spherion, Smith was instrumental in combining the administrative operations of 35 different companies, all acquired by Spherion between 1994 and 1999. Smith came to Spherion from Ryder Systems in Miami, Florida, where he held a number of positions of increasing responsibility in finance, most recently as group director, planning and analysis. Smith was previously a manager at Arthur Andersen for six years. A CPA, Smith received a Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting from Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants and Financial Executives International.
