Jason Goldberg

Jason Goldberg leads the firm’s entertainment and media practice in China, which advises media companies, motion picture studios, producers, talent, financial institutions and investment funds on their activities in the PRC. Mr. Goldberg currently advises two of the major Hollywood studios on projects in China, including studio titles intended for wide international distribution and local productions primarily for the China market. He recently served as production counsel for "Man of Tai Chi," Keanu Reeves’s directorial debut, which has been picked up by Universal. His practice covers film financing, development, talent agreements, production, foreign direct investment, strategic cooperation and joint ventures, copyright, distribution, and other aspects of the media and entertainment industry in China. Mr. Goldberg has an expertise in new media and internet platforms, having advised, inter alia, one of China’s leading search engine companies. Mr. Goldberg’s clients also include leading Chinese media companies with respect to their international projects. In 2012, Variety magazine named Mr. Goldberg one of “50 Game-Changing Attorneys” in its 2012 Legal Impact Report. The special feature recognizes the world’s top entertainment lawyers whose deals and court battles over the past 18 months have changed the shape of the business. Mr. Goldberg speaks Mandarin Chinese. REPRESENTATIVE MATTERS Currently advising two of the major Hollywood studios on projects in China. Production counsel for Keanu Reeves’s directorial debut, "Man of Tai Chi," a co-production involving Village Roadshow Entertainment Group Asia and China Film Group, and which has been picked up by Universal. Advising many of the leading independents active in China, including Village Roadshow Pictures Asia, on film projects. Providing copyright and IP advice to Celestial Pictures, the owner of the Shaw Brothers library, the largest Chinese-language film collection in the world. Advised Celestial Pictures on certain PRC regulatory issues in connection with the formation of Celestial Tiger Entertainment, the joint venture Celestial formed with Lionsgate and the Saban Capital Group in late 2011. Advised actor John Lone (of "M. Butterfly," "Rush Hour 2" and the Academy-award winning "The Last Emperor") in exploring China opportunities. Advised the US software company Adobe on a media-related project in China. Currently chief outside counsel to a leading independent producer of Chinese reality television shows, including "Pepsi’s Battle of the Bands" and the "Miss Universe China Reignwood Pageant." PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE Prior to moving to China in 2007, Mr. Goldberg served as a federal prosecutor with the Department of Justice in San Diego, California. As an Assistant United States Attorney, Mr. Goldberg served as lead counsel for the United States in several federal jury trials. His responsibilities included prosecuting drug smuggling, alien smuggling, bank robbery, federal murder, fraud and other federal crimes.
