Daniel L. “Danny” Hendon, the Phoenix car wash titan and fledgling developer, filed for personal Chapter 11 reorganization bankruptcy July 25 2011, asserting total liabilities of more than $317 million and assets of roughly $10.5 million. Hendon is widely known in the Valley as the owner of a collection of car washes and convenience stores operated mostly under the Danny’s Family Car Wash name. He also made news during the past several years as the co-developer of a proposed blockbuster project named Main Street Glendale, a sports-themed commercial and residential development on about 140 acres near University of Phoenix Stadium and Westgate City Center. Hendon and his partner Robert Banovac proposed the project under two corporate names: Rightpath Limited Development Group, and its successor, HB Equities. The project fell apart before construction began because Rightpath was unable to secure about $1.2 billion in industrial revenue bond financing through the La Paz County Industrial Development Authority. The personal bankruptcy follows corporate bankruptcy actions filed last year that involved the car washes and convenience stores, ownership in a commercial real estate project that houses Danny’s corporate offices and the failed Barcelona restaurant in Scottsdale. According to the 94-page bankruptcy document, Hendon filed 25 separate bankruptcy actions related to those entities. All of those cases are pending in U.S. Bankruptcy court.
