Bought 522,000 acres of Santa Fe Southern Pacific Railroad timberland with a $460 million loan in 1988. Today company owns nearly 2 million acres of timberland in California and Washington; nation's second-largest lumber producer by volume. Firm offered $45 million for bankrupt Pacific Lumber in July; outbid by the Gap's Fisher family. Wears jeans, drives pickup truck. Son Mark handles finances.
