Karl Taro Greenfeld

Karl is the author of six books, including the novel Triburbia, Boy Alone, about his autistic brother Noah, Speed Tribes, Standard Deviations and China Syndrome. A long time writer and editor for The Nation, TIME and Sports Illustrated, he was the editor of TIME Asia and was among the founding editors of Sports Illustrated China. His fiction has appeared in Harper’s, Best American Short Stories, PEN/O Henry Prize Stories, The Paris Review, Ploughshares, American Short Fiction, The Missouri Review, One Story, Commentary, The Southern Review and The Sun. He has also written multiple times for The New York Times, GQ, Vogue, Condé Nast Traveler, Wired, Playboy, Bloomberg Businessweek, Details, Men’s Journal, The Washington Post, Outside, Condé Nast Portfolio and Salon. His books have been translated into 12 languages and his writing selected for Best American Sports Writing, Best American Travel Writing, Best American Nonrequired Reading, Best Creative Nonfiction and numerous other anthologies. Karl earned a BA in Political Science and Economics from Sarah Lawrence College in 1988, and was a Knight-Bagehot Fellow, obtaining a certificate in Business and Economics as well as a M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University in 1998. Karl was born in Kobe, Japan, has lived in Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Los Angeles. He currently lives in TriBeCa with his wife and their two daughters. Karl is a member of the 2004 class of Henry Crown Fellows at the Aspen Institute.
