Michael Alvarez

Commissioner Michael A. Alvarez was elected November 2, 2010, to his first term as a Commissioner at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. Commissioner Alvarez is the Chairman of the Federal Legislation Committee and the Stormwater Management Committee. He serves as the Vice Chairman of the Labor and Industrial Relations Committee and State Legislation and Rules Committee. Commissioner Alvarez has enjoyed a fast-paced career closely associated with local, state, and federal government activities that serve the interests of the citizens and businesses of the State of Illinois. Commissioner Alvarez was a Senior Advisor to Senator Barack Obama. In this capacity, he provided strategic and political counsel to the Senator and his staff and served as liaison to various constituency and ethnic groups. He also was responsible for communicating and negotiating with city, state, county, and federal elected officials on a variety of initiatives on behalf of constituents. Prior to his position with Senator Obama’s office, Commissioner Alvarez served as the Deputy Director of Community Relations & Legislative Affairs for the Illinois Department of Employment Security in Chicago. Commissioner Alvarez is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the National Able Network as well as a member of the Union League Club of Chicago. Commissioner Alvarez has a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and a Master’s degree in Corporate and Managerial Communication, both from Northwestern University. Michael and his wife, Erin, along with their sons, Luke, Patrick and Michael live on Chicago’s north side.
