Thomas Gionis

Dr. Thomas A. Gionis serves as the Surgeon-in-Chief of the Irvine Stem Cell Treatment Center, and also the Medical Director and Director of Stem Cell Research for the Irvine Stem Cell Treatment Center. Dr. Gionis has been a practicing physician and surgeon for 40 years. He is recognized as the youngest individual in the United States to have obtained his MD degree. After completing high school at 16, Dr. Gionis started medical school at 17 years of age (having completed 3 ½ years of college in one year), and obtained his M.D. medical degree at 21. Dr. Gionis is a Physician, Attorney, Public Health specialist, and United States Fulbright Scholar in Law, and frequent lecturer, world-wide, for seminars and conferences sponsored by the United Nations UNESCO organization. Dr. Gionis serves as President and Chairman of the Board, Fulbright Academy of Law, Peace and Public Health (Washington, DC) (www.FulbrightAcademyLaw.org) and also serves as United States Fulbright PEER Review Committee – Global / Public Health. He has served twice as UCLA Visiting Scholar in Public Health, UCLA School of Public Health; and has held positions such as Clinical Professor of Surgery, Western University of Health Sciences (Los Angeles, California); and Adjunct Professor of Law, Thomas Jefferson School of Law International Tax Program (San Diego, California). Dr. Gionis has been recognized as a Fellow, American College of Legal Medicine; Fellow, American Institute for Healthcare Quality; and Fellow, International College of Surgeons. Dr. Gionis has 2 doctorate degrees (Medicine (MD) and Law (JD)) and 4 Master’s Degrees. Dr. Gionis obtained his M.D. degree from the Medical University of South Carolina; J.D. degree (Cum Laude), John Marshall Law School; L.L.M., St. Thomas University School of Law; M.B.A., Pepperdine University Graduate School of Business; M.H.A., Seton Hall University, Center for Public Service; and his M.P.H., University of California, Los Angeles (U.C.L.A.) School of Public Health. Dr. Gionis has also served as a lecturer in the Executive Master of Public Health (MPH) program at the UCLA School of Public Health, where he lectured in Health Law and Principles of Global Health. Dr. Gionis is a frequent Lecturer in Bioethics, International Law, Peace and Public Health, at various international United Nations UNESCO bioethics workshops and seminars. Additionally, Dr. Gionis has lectured world-wide on Human Research Subject Protection and Human Rights, and is recognized as having specialized expertise in the legal structuring, compliance and function of Institutional Review Boards (IRB’s) which oversee Human Subject Research in the United States and other parts of the world. Dr. Gionis has completed seven years of surgical training and surgical fellowship. Dr. Gionis completed his five-year General Surgery residency training at Tulane Medical Center-Charity Hospital, New Orleans, Louisiana; and also completed his two year Cardiovascular Surgery fellowship at Tulane Medical Center-Charity Hospital, New Orleans, Louisiana. Additionally, Dr. Gionis completed his Research Fellowship in Emergency Medicine, at the Harvard University-Massachusetts General Hospital, Department of Emergency Medicine Research (MGH) Boston, and taught advanced trauma life support at Harvard-MGH for over a decade. Dr. Gionis has served as a Member of the Board of Directors, American Board of Disaster Medicine, a Physician Board Examiner for the American Board of Disaster Medicine, and Distinguished Fellow, Royal Society of Fellows. Dr. Gionis is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians and is a Fellow, American Institute for Healthcare Quality. As President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Fulbright Academy of Law, Peace and Public Health, Dr. Thomas A. Gionis has assembled a prestigious group of Board Members who are known throughout the world for their contributions in international human rights, peace, international law, and public health. The Fulbright Academy of Law, Peace and Public Health conducted comprehensive and significant public health research which led to the development of the creation of the first-ever Medical School to be developed on Native American Sovereign land, the American University of Sovereign Nations School of Medicine (AUSN), located in Scottsdale, Arizona.
