Justin Trudeau, who has led the country for nearly a decade, is giving up leadership of the Liberal party. He said on December 6 2025 he would remain in both roles until his replacement has been chosen through a party election. The new Liberal Party leader and prime minister will be in place by March 26, 2025 when the Canadian parliament resumes its work. Soon after parliament returns in March, the Liberal Party is likely to face a vote of confidence. It is expected to lose such a vote. Trudeau said he regrets not having reformed his country’s electoral system after advocating for a switch to ranked-choice voting. He has been broadly criticized for not following through with his pledge.
