Mr. Altshuler became a Dallas insurance executive, founding Republic Bankers Life, which became Life of America Insurance Co. Mr. Altshuler, 88, died December 2009 of complications of bladder cancer at his Dallas home. Mr. Altshuler was born in Paterson, N.J., and received a bachelor's degree from Bard College, then an undergraduate school at Columbia University in New York. Mr. Altshuler earned his doctor of law degree from the University of Virginia. He briefly practiced law in New Jersey before beginning to establish insurance agencies in the U.S. and Canada. Mr. Altshuler lived in San Antonio before moving in the mid-1950s to Dallas, where he continued to build his insurance and banking business. For many years, he served on the board of Allied Bank in Oak Cliff. He was a member of the Oak Cliff Country Club. In addition to his brother Ken Altshuler, Mr. Altshuler is survived by his wife, P.J. Altshuler of Dallas; and three sisters, Helen Levine of Oklahoma City, Rosalind Berman of New Jersey and Sylvia Krugman of New York.
