This week marks the 20th anniversary of the murder of the Notorious B.I.G., born Christopher Wallace, and it seems that all music fans of a certain age are collectively mourning and remembering one of the rap industry’s slain giants. The Brooklyn-born rapper’s estate is also releasing a refreshed fashion line, presumably to capitalize off the timing of new interest in the unsolved murder, which occurred 20 years ago today. Wallace’s mother, Voletta, last year said she only considers marketing items that positively represent her son, who died at age 24 in a drive-by shooting. Big’s legacy is a money maker, with his estate reportedly valued at $160 million. His lyrics alone are a licensing goldmine and “Big Poppa” was used in a 2014 Taco Bell commercial. The 2009 film Notorious raked in dollars and views. And now, on this anniversary, the estate is rolling out a number of items.
