Donald Vareen

is the Director of Community Based Public Health (CBPH) at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. CBPH develops and utilizes the power of equal partnerships between community-based organizations, academic institutions, and health agencies to address health issues in communities. At NIH, he developed new research strategies to address drug abuse, addiction, mental illness, and violence by establishing extra- and intergovernmental collaborations including with the District of Columbia. From 1998 to 2001, Dr. Vereen served as Deputy Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy at the White House. In addition to oversight of new methadone treatment regulations and drug prevention initiatives, he represented the U.S. in international demand reduction activities including the World Anti-doping Agency (WADA). He returned to NIH to help develop translational and clinical research efforts to address health disparities and the transfer of research findings to practitioners and the public.
