Mr. Baker was chairman of Wachovia Corporation from 2001 until his retirement in 2003. Mr. Baker joined Wachovia in 1969, where he served as chairman, president and chief executive officer from 1998 to 2001, and as chief executive officer from 1994 to 1998. He is a director of the North Carolina Arboretum, Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, Old Salem, Inc. and the James B. Hunt Institute for Education.
