Raised in the mountains of Dickenson County, Va. He graduated from Clintwood High School and then received an undergraduate degree in mass communication from East Tennessee State University in 1987. Triplett worked as a sports writer for the Bristol Herald-Courier and later became a spokesman for GM Goodwrench. He then spent 10 years working for NASCAR in Daytona Beach, Fla. He moved back to Virginia in 2003.
