The Woods' estate will be divided equally between Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn., Berea College in Berea, Ky., and Centre College of Kentucky in Danville, Ky., said the Rev. Larry Shinn, president of Berea College. Born in Eminence, Ky., Ms. Wood grew up in Smithfield, Ky. She attended Maryville College and later the University of Kentucky. She taught school from 1929 to 1937 before becoming a reading specialist with the American Book Co. In 1944, she joined Scott, Foresman & Co. and moved to Dallas two years later. Scott, Foresman is best known to many as the publishers of the Dick and Jane readers that were popular during the whole-word era of reading instruction. In 1958, Ms. Wood, then 50, married Col. Alfred M. Wood, a 61-year-old regional Procter & Gamble executive. Mr. Wood was a decorated pilot with the Navy during World War I and with the Army Air Forces during World War II. He was 101 years old when he died in 1997. Col. Wood is credited with taking the Southwest division of Procter & Gamble from last place to first place in national sales
