Daniel B. Hales is director of The Heartland Institute, an independent, nonprofit research center founded in 1984 and headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Hales has been a partner in the Chicago-based law firm of Peterson & Ross since 1967. In 1997, he was named recipient of the first annual John Jay Award by the Chicago Lawyers Chapter of The Federalist Society.He is a director and past secretary of the Chicago Crime Commission; president and director of Americans for Effective Law Enforcement Inc.; and general counsel and a former trustee of The Philadelphia Society.He was chairman of Illinois Lawyers for Reagan and Bush in 1980. Mr. Hales is currently a member of the Chicago Bar Association (on whose Trust Law Committee he has served since 1975) and the Illinois State Bar Association.He is admitted to practice before the Illinois Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Hales holds a J.D. from Northwestern University Law School and competed his undergraduate work in economics at the University of Michigan.
