Governor Janet Napolitano appointed Robert McLendon to a four-year term on The Arizona Board of Regents in January 2008 to represent rural Arizona. Regent McLendon currently chairs the Capital Committee and is the vice-chair of the Public Awareness and Legislative Affairs Committee. He also co-chaired the Joint Conference Committee and the Legislative Affairs Committee from 2008 to 2009. McLendon is a long time educator, teaching American History and Government for 19 years at Yuma High School and coaching the school’s basketball team. He was an elected member of the Arizona House of Representatives from 1982 to 2000 and served as the House Democratic Leader from 1999 to 2000. Subsequently, McLendon served on the Yuma County Board of Supervisors where he was the Chairman in 2002 and took on the role of President of the Arizona Board of Supervisors in 2004 before retiring from elected office. He currently participates in numerous municipal, academic and civic commissions including the Yuma County Airport Authority. McLendon has also been inducted into the Arizona Small Schools Hall of Fame and Yuma County Education Foundation Hall of Fame. He received recognition as the Yuma Union High School Teacher of the Year for grades 7-12 in 1996, and, in 2006, was honored as the Yuma County Citizen of the Year. McLendon has resided in Yuma since 1961. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in American History and Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Arizona State University. He is married to Sandy, has one daughter, Bobbi Jo Coxon, and three grandsons, Andrew, TJ and Robert.
