Professor Sir Howard Newby CBE is Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool. He formerly had a range of academic roles: the University of Essex (1972-88); Director of the ESRC Data Archive (1983-88); Chairman of the ESRC (1988-94); Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton (1994-2001); and Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council (England) (2001-06).
