Diplomatic career: Joined the Foreign Service in 1971. 1973-1977: Permanent Mission of Belgium to the European Union. 1977-1981: Belgian Embassy in Athens. 1981-1984: Permanent Mission of Belgium to the European Union. 1984-1986: Spokesman of the Foreign Ministry. 1986-1989: Belgian Embassy in Rome. 1989-1993: Deputy Permanent Representative of the Belgian Mission to the United Nations in New York, and Representative to the UN Security Council (1991-1992). 1993-1997: Director General for Political Affairs at the Foreign Ministry. 1997-2002: Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the European Union. 2002-2006: Belgium’s Ambassador to the United States.
