Tim Chen started his new role as Partner for GL Capital Group in November 2010. The private equity firm was established in 2009 with offices in Beijing and Shanghai. GL’s overall objective is to achieve long-term capital appreciation through equity, and equity-related investments in companies with strong business fundamentals and whose primary business is located in Greater China. GL is currently managing the GL China Opportunities Fund of US$430mn. While the Fund may invest across diverse industry sectors, it will pursue a disciplined strategic approach focused mainly on the healthcare sector, an industry in which GL believes it has a competitive advantage. Chen joined the NBA in September 2007 as CEO of NBA China. During his three years tenure, Chen successfully helped the NBA attract $253 million from strategic investment partners and oversaw the NBA enterprise which encapsulates all of the league’s businesses in Greater China, including television, digital media, marketing partnerships, global merchandising, events and new initiatives. Chen is still with NBA China as a member of Board of Directors. Chen came to the NBA from Microsoft as Corp. Vice President, CEO of the Greater China Region, and led the company’s growth in China. Under his leadership, Microsoft sales and revenue grew more rapidly in the Greater China region than in any other markets in the world, and the company significantly increased its investment in R&D and domestic software ventures. Chen was Corp. Vice President of Motorola Inc, Chairman and President of Motorola (China) Electronics Ltd. from 2001 to 2003 and increased the company’s market share to become the leader in the competitive Chinese mobile communications industry. Prior to 2001, Chen spent eight years with Motorola, including serving as its general manager responsible for marketing and sales operations for the Greater China Cellular Infrastructure Division. Before this, Chen spent nine years at AT&T Labs based in the United States. Chen earned his undergraduate degree at Chiao Tung University in Taiwan, an MBA from the University of Chicago, and two master’s degrees in computer science and mathematics. He currently resides in Beijing with his wife and two children.
