Hunt Downer

Downer served multiple terms in the state Legislature as a Democrat, including several years as House Speaker, before joining the GOP and making an unsuccessful Republican bid for governor in 2003. General Downer served 28 years, seven terms, in the Louisiana House of Representatives (1978 - 2004). He served as Speaker Pro Tempore’ (1988-1992) and Speaker of the House (1996-2000).
