I joined Metabiota in 2010, when it was still Global Viral Forecasting Inc., and got the initial R&D underway for an epidemic surveillance system we dubbed epidemicIQ. The service aggregated hundreds of thousands of news feeds in over 50 languages scanning for any chatter of epidemic outbreaks around the world via a sophisticated natural language processing engine that sifted out subtle and easy to overlook hits. I recruited key hires on engineering and analysis and together we got an initial proof of concept completed for demonstration to the Department of Homeland Security and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, from whom we won a conference award.
