COALA is a nonprofit organization and global community of academic research institutions and blockchain experts ranging across multiple disciplines. It provides a global forum to facilitate collaboration and coordination between multiple stakeholders in order to further the development and improve the governance of decentralized blockchain-based networks, with a particular focus on the elaboration of core technical and legal standards for the blockchain ecosystem.
COALA has three core missions:
(a) Community building and interdisciplinary collaboration, through the organization of internal community workshops, public conferences, and policy roundtables, with representation at the Internet Governance Forum.
(b) Legal analysis of blockchain technology and development of governance frameworks and techno-legal tools to resolve critical regulatory gaps.
(c) Research & development of foundational building-blocks, protocols and applications, with representation at key technical standards-setting bodies, e.g., W3C and IETF.
COALA has partnered with several academic institutions, including Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, Cambridge, Oxford UCL, CNRS, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, and many more, to drive scientific and fact-based research for the blockchain ecosystem for the last three years.
