In one of the most important changes since it started 75 years ago, the Tec de Monterrey is almost completely transforming its teaching model.
As of the 2019-2020 school year, it will begin to implement 100% what it has called the TEC21 Educational Model.
It characterized by based learning challenges, the flexibility in how we learn, the momentum of a memorable experience and inspiring teachers.

A NEW TEACHING MODEL
"We realized that we were reaching 21st century students at universities [...] with models that date back centuries," explains to CONECTA, the rector, David Garza.
Among other things, it refers, for example, to a model where students mainly only listened to their teacher sitting down .
The new educational model , in contrast, opts for more training with practical challenges , which combines theory with the adoption of skills .
It will begin in all careers and semesters in 2019 , although for 4 years, it has already been partially implemented.
"We realized that we were getting students of the XXI century to universities [...] with models that date back centuries."

"The interesting thing about the new model is that more than 50 percent of the student's training occurs outside the classroom and with challenges," Garza details.
In addition, he adds, it is a flexible model that allows students to explore areas, take various class modalities and specialization paths .
Also, it is committed to maintaining expert and inspiring teachers , coupled with a memorable integral student experience .

TEACHING WITH REAL CHALLENGES
One of the objectives of the new TEC21 Educational Model is for young people to release and further develop their potential to transform their environment in the face of the challenges of the 21st century.
"After 4 or 5 years, a student is now going to graduate and may be working in companies or organizations that do not yet exist, " says Garza.
With learning challenges, the aim is for students to gain a lot more experience with tests such as those that face outside the university.
"These challenges designed by teachers are problems linked to an organization or a community problem, where the student puts their knowledge into practice or develops new ones," Garza details.
"After 4 or 5 years, a student is now going to graduate and ... solve problems that we have not yet identified as problems today ."
Currently, the model is already in progress, with dynamics such as Semester i (optional) or Week i (one in each semester), where students solve challenges.
The challenges are made under the guidance of teachers and with the coordination of a training partner , which can be an NGO, company, public entity, etc.
Román Martínez, Vice Chancellor for Educational Transformation , explains that the gradual implementation of the model has been a success and is ready to be applied in all campuses and semesters.
"There are already exercises (studies) that tell us that the boys who participate in Semester i, learn more or better than those who are in a normal semester," he tells CONECTA.

A FLEXIBLE MODEL
In the new educational model, flexibility is also a crucial aspect.
TEC21 reinforces the options to take classes in various locations in the country or abroad and in various face -to- face and distance modes .
In addition, the change of career to another in the same area and the exploration of knowledge and challenges of other careers becomes more natural.
"There are few entrances and many exits," says Rector Garza. “There is a front door called Business; another, Engineering; another, Humanities ...
“You enter through that front door and from the first semesters you will be able to explore ...
"Then decide and take the rest of your career, as challenge-based learning experiences, and thus also specialize . "

MEMORABLE AND INTEGRAL EXPERIENCE
In addition to the academic aspect, the model contemplates the promotion of a comprehensive training and a memorable university experience.
An essential part of this aspect is the LiFE program , (Student Leadership and Training) , designed to contribute to the development of transversal skills for all students .
Comprehensive training with LiFE contemplates the development of the student in areas such as physical and sporting, artistic, that of leadership and even nutritional, psychological and emotional wellbeing.

TEACHERS AND MENTORS
"In the Tec21 Educational Model, the role of the teacher is fundamental when exercising different functions aimed at accompanying the student in the learning process and in the development of competences," says Tec in a presentation document.
Specialized teachers , such as those who have always distinguished Tec, with good adaptation to technology and cutting-edge learning methods are key here.
In addition, the model broadens a range for teachers with new roles such as: advisor, evaluator, mentor, Challenge designer and professor.
