While accepting the nomination in summer '09 the EU (including Estonia) had just entered deep financial crisis. The Finance Committee introduced an passed several structural reforms (incl. raising the retirement age, designing the social subsidies to be more need-based etc). As a result Estonia was one of only 4 countries in EU that met all the Stability and Growth Pact criteria throughout the crisis and joined the Eurozone in 1.01.2011.

Estonia has a reputation of being a constructive pro-European country that believes in free trade and open and dynamic Europe. All the government's positions at council meetings get a mandate from the parliamentary committee. |
