“We are taking a multi-faceted approach through NWEA MAP, Lexia RAPID (our selected dyslexia screener), EL Curriculum’s Skills block — our literacy curriculum across our schools, and small group reading intervention,” Harrison added. “We are exploring what works, what doesn’t, and acting on our findings.”
At Lighthouse, that means a “bottom-up” approach that focuses first on the students in grades K-2 who are below the 50th percentile in reading comprehension on the MAP Growth test. Starting in January, these students are screened for dyslexia, which is followed by an intervention plan and tiered supports which are especially needed with the loss of instruction time from distance learning.
Weaver said that Lighthouse has stepped up to be the first, but he hopes others will follow.
