Liz Truss accepted a £20,000 trip to a little-known US right-wing conference on a private island attended by academic Jordan Peterson and prominent backers of Donald Trump, i can reveal.
The three-day workshop at five star hotel The Cloister at Sea Island in the southern US state of Georgia aimed to coach aspiring politicians by “exposing them to thought-leaders experienced in making conservative arguments”.
The Green Dragon Coalition’s website also claims that it exists to “educate” aspiring political candidates on “how to dispel the lies of wokism, diversity equity and inclusion, ESG [environmental social and government], critical race theory and immigration”.
Attendees are understood to have included Mr Peterson, the conservative Canadian professor and leading figure in the culture wars.
i has seen a photograph of the academic at the hotel during the conference dates with another guest that attended the Green Dragon Coalition event.
There is little public information about who runs the Green Dragon Coalition, but Mike Lee, US Republican senator for Utah and a prominent backer of Mr Trump, is thought to have attended.
Mr Lee is a known associate of Ms Truss, and wrote the forward for her upcoming book, Ten Years to Save the West. A banner on the Green Dragon Coalition‘s website features the US senator.
i can also reveal Ms Truss met with the senator on at least one other occasion during her stint in America this spring, during which she also gave a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) alongside former US president Donald Trump.
The Green Dragon Coalition’s website states that the conference was “worthy of the urgency of the moment”. It added: “You are invited, because we believe you are one of the select few people who can help our great nation right her ship.”
Mr Lee has previously appeared on Mr Peterson’s podcast several times, where they have discussed topics including “the demise of the West”.
They were also pictured together on 1 February, the day before the Green Dragon Coalition conference began, inside the US Senate in Washington DC.
Mr Peterson, who has dubbed himself a “professor against political correctness,” has built a loyal following, but has run into controversy several times during his career for his views on issues such as gender politics.
